American Hiking Society is here to help make your hike as enjoyable as ever and to make sure that you – and future generations – will always have plenty of great places to hike. Our mission, as the national voice for America's hikers, is to promote and protect foot trails and the hiking experience. Some of the ways we do this is through:

  • Volunteerism, Outreach, & Education: American Hiking organizes and coordinates Volunteer Vacations and National Trails Day® – nationally-recognized programs that help keep our trails open, safe, and enjoyable; tens of thousands of miles of trails have benefited from the volunteers and increased awareness provided by these programs. Additionally, American Hiking is committed to increasing the participation and enjoyment of hiking by all Americans.

  • Policy & Advocacy: Since 1976, American Hiking has worked with Congress and federal agencies such as the National Park Service, Forest Service, and Bureau of Land Management on policy issues and legislation to ensure funding for trails and trail programs, the preservation of natural areas, and the protection of the hiking experience.

  • Trail Grants and Technical Assistance: American Hiking manages the National Trails Fund, the only national private grants program to help local trail-maintaining organizations build and improve hiking trails in your community. We also serve hiking clubs and other groups throughout the nation through our Alliance of Hiking Organizations. Our regional office in Chattanooga, Tennessee is helping to build a 5,000-mile network of trails in the Southeast through our Southern Appalachians Initiative

While these are only the highlights of our efforts, there’s still much more! But we can’t do all of this alone! Our strength – on Capitol Hill and on the ground – is in the support we have from hikers all across America. Hikers like you. Your membership gift will allow American Hiking Society to continue to be a voice in the halls of Congress, speaking up for hikers, and trails and their environments. So, please, take a moment and begin your hike with us today!
