Some of the best things about a great hike are the stories of the trials and tribulations along the way. We live through those stories when not on the trail, and recount them to fellow hikers whenever the opportunity arises. Hiker's Journal is a special section dedicated to such stories. NEW IN THE HIKER'S JOURNALAziscohos Mountain Liftoff (PDF 72KB) by Allen Wicken.I think I set a speed record last week for hiking up Maineâs 2-mile Aziscohos Mountain Trail.Ê However, I wasnât checking my wrist watch, therefore a time wonât be submitted to the Guinness Book of World Records.Ê I spent too much time checking what I could see of the sky through the canopy of trees, and listening for the thumping sound of helicopter blades as I bounded over rocks and slippery tree roots en route to the summit. VOLUNTEER IN THE BOUNDARY WATERSVolunteering in Minnesota's Boundary Waters (PDF 4.8 MB) by Julia Eagles.I was one of the six adventurers who responded to this American Hiking Society advertisement requesting volunteers to assist the Kekekabic Trail Club and the US Forest Service with the maintenance of a trail in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness of Minnesota. This was only my second volunteer vacation with American Hiking and, like the first one, it's a story worth telling. COAST TO COAST WITH ED, 1999From March 6 through November 18, we followed hiker Ed Talone as he hiked from the mid-west to the pacific coast and then back to the Atlantic. His friend, Sue Lockwood, and her guide dog, "Buddy," accompanied him. Follow along with us and learn where Ed has been and what he's been through on this riveting, and often poignant, adventure.
