American Hiking Society's Western Public Lands Initiative raises awareness of the phenomenal trails and resources of lands managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), particularly the BLM's National Landscape Conservation System. The National Landscape Conservation System, established by the BLM in 2000, encompasses 26 million acres of the best lands and waters in the west. The BLM's Conservation System represents a revolution in managing public lands for conservation, recreation, science and history. BLM has unparalleled trails where you can explore the unique resources of the west, free from crowds and within sight of towering peaks, ancient petroglyphs and diverse wildlife. Just released! American Hiking, in cooperation with the BLM, is proud to announce the results of our search to find some of the best hikes in the west. Click here to explore hikes that feature midnight sun, knee-deep wildflowers, petroglyphs and the opportunity to experience traditional western lifestyles. How does American Hiking Society's Western Public Lands Initiative promote and protect the BLM's Conservation System?
